Psychedelic-assisted therapy: what clinical studies are finding

The clinical interest in psychedelics is real. Understanding the findings means looking at the full treatment setting, not only the substance or the headline.

Depression research

A 2023 randomized trial involving 104 adults with major depressive disorder compared psilocybin with niacin, both accompanied by psychological support. The psilocybin group showed greater reductions in depressive symptoms over the six-week follow-up. Participants were screened, and the study used a defined clinical protocol. Read the JAMA trial.

This is evidence about that intervention in that population. It should not be presented as proof that every plant-assisted wellness experience offers the same benefits.

Research on alcohol use

NCCIH’s evidence overview describes a 2022 trial in which psilocybin sessions combined with psychotherapy reduced heavy drinking more than an active placebo combined with psychotherapy. The same overview discusses mixed findings in other comparisons and the importance of safety. Read the NIH summary.

Alcohol use disorder was the condition being studied. Extending that result to all addictions, or to unsupported use, would go beyond the evidence. If substance use is part of your concern, specialist assessment and an appropriate care plan matter.

The surrounding support is part of the evidence

Screening, preparation, monitoring and psychological support are not decorative extras in these trials. They are part of what researchers evaluated. The lasting effects of an experience cannot be judged only by how intense, moving or visually vivid it felt.

Research also needs to examine adverse effects, which people benefit and how outcomes change over longer follow-up. Psilocybin can cause distress and other adverse effects; it is not appropriate for everyone. A careful provider should be able to discuss both the possibilities and the risks.

What to ask when exploring Colorado options

Clarify whether a service is clinical treatment, regulated facilitation or nonclinical preparation and integration. Ask who provides screening and follow-up, and verify credentials through the appropriate official channels.

For someone traveling to the Roaring Fork Valley, a realistic plan includes care after returning home. Sound, guided rest and personal reflection can be discussed as wellness supports, without confusing them with the clinical protocols described above.
