Recovery practice

Ending the workday when your mind is still at work

What research on psychological detachment suggests about creating a believable boundary between work and recovery.

From Healing Rituals · Published

The body can leave before attention does

Work can continue internally through rehearsed conversations, unfinished tasks and notifications. Psychological detachment means allowing work-related thought to loosen during nonwork time—not caring less about the work.

What detachment interventions show

A meta-analysis of 30 studies found that interventions produced a modest average improvement in detachment from work. Read the review.

Use a closing sequence, not a perfect off-switch

Try a three-part ending: record what remains, name the first task for tomorrow and change one sensory cue—location, clothing, sound or light. If work thoughts return, remind yourself where they were stored.

Recovery cannot compensate for endless demand

No ritual can compensate for chronic overwork, harassment or unstable conditions. Practical boundaries and organizational changes may be essential. Explore stress recovery, nature pauses, or stress support.
